"Why is he suddenly treating you like this?" Even Natalie, who didn't share a deep bond with the woman, felt an overwhelming ache for her.

Cora offered a weak, bitter smile. "He thinks I intentionally caused Gardenia to fall into the water. This is my punishment."

"You married him, you didn't sell your soul to him!" Natalie helped her up and led her out.

She opened the back door of the car and carefully guided Cora inside. Mia followed, her face streaked with tears. "I'm sorry, Mommy. It's all because I got into a fight with Adrian."

Cora had already passed out. Natalie gently touched Mia's face and wiped away her tears. "Mia, sweetheart, this isn't your fault."

Hassan stepped out of the building a moment later. He got into the passenger seat, gave Natalie a cool, detached glance, and instructed the driver, "To the hospital."

Cora woke up halfway through the drive, her consciousness slipping in and out.

Natalie had no idea how long she had been burning up, but judging by her raspy breathing, the fever had likely been raging since the night before.

The doctor frowned deeply after the examination. "Why did you wait so long to bring her in? Any later, and the fever could have caused permanent brain damage."

Hassan didn't stay by Cora's side once they arrived. He headed straight to the sixth floor, obviously to check on Adrian.

Natalie's gaze swept over the empty space beside her.

Arranging Cora's admission kept her busy enough to stop her mind from wandering.

Her grandmother, Yvonne, came to the hospital out of concern and brought extra portions of food.

"She's a grown woman. Why wouldn't she come to the hospital if she had a fever?" Yvonne didn't know the full story; she just felt terrible seeing a perfectly fine person reduced to this state.

She knew all too well the blessing of a healthy body, and the agonizing torment of illness.
