Quinn's words resonated with an incredible power in the empty room.
Natalie felt a fierce surge of tears erupt from her chest. So this was what it felt like to be cherished.
*Click.* The bedroom door opened, and the man walked in, bringing the evening chill with him.
Although Natalie had rapidly composed herself, she couldn't hide the faint redness around her eyes and nose.
He paused for a moment, then walked over to her. Bending slightly, his large hand cupped half her face while his thumb brushed against the corner of her eye. "Why are you crying?"
His deep voice carried a rare trace of tenderness.
But Natalie turned her face away, stood up, and retreated to the bathroom.
Hassan's gaze followed her until the door clicked shut. He lowered his eyes, glancing at the closed laptop on the desk.
Natalie rarely used a computer since it wasn't necessary for dancing, but she had been on it frequently lately.
He dragged a finger along the edge of the desk, brushing against her laptop bag. Just then, a ringtone cut through the silence. He paused, pulled out his phone, and upon seeing the caller ID, walked straight out to the balcony to answer.
He was still on the phone by the time Natalie finished washing up and came out.
She didn't look toward the balcony. She walked to the desk, grabbed her laptop, and slipped it back into her bag.
On her phone, she replied with a simple 'Thank you' to Quinn.
Understanding exactly what she meant, he excitedly sent back a barrage of funny GIFs and memes.
Natalie stared blankly at the screen. It had been a long time since she had tried opening up to new things or new people.
She and Hassan had never really dated; they just went straight into marriage. He was certainly not the type of person to send silly GIFs in text messages.
Suddenly, it felt like connecting with someone new wasn't so bad after all. She saved the GIFs Quinn sent and fired them back at him.
