Natalie followed Cyrus into his room, watching him pull a first-aid kit from a cabinet. He took out some burn ointment, cotton swabs, and antiseptic spray.
He gave her a quick glance.
She was wearing a dress, and the burn was right over her abdomen, leaving a small charred hole in the exquisite fabric.
He handed the supplies to her and pointed toward the bathroom. "Rinse it with cold water for a few minutes. Afterward, dab it gently with a cotton swab and the antiseptic spray to disinfect it. Then use another swab to apply a thin layer of the ointment over the burn."
"I'll have a maid bring in fresh towels shortly." With that, he lowered his head, walked out of the room, and shut the door behind him.
Natalie looked back at the closed door. Touched by the unexpected kindness, her eyes inexplicably welled up with tears.
Sometimes, it was the gentle concern of others that magnified all the grievances buried in your heart. Blinking rapidly, she stepped into the bathroom. Since she hardly knew Cyrus, she instinctively locked the door.
She turned on the shower to the lowest setting, letting the icy cold water run over the burn.
She hadn't taken her dress completely off, only removing her shoes and undergarments to allow access to the injury.
As the water flowed down her thighs and calves, her mind began to wander.
She hadn't heard the bedroom door open, not until someone knocked on the bathroom door several times, startling her back to reality.
Assuming Cyrus had sent the maid with the towels, she turned off the water, walked over, and cracked the door open just an inch.
When she reached her hand out, it was suddenly grabbed by a larger, warm hand. The palm was dry, the fingers long and distinctly masculine.
Looking down, she realized instantly whose hand it was and tried to yank hers back to slam the door shut.
But the man didn't give her a chance. Gripping her hand tightly, he pushed the door open and stepped inside.
Not caring if her dress got soaked, Natalie immediately let her skirt drop.
The wet fabric brushed against the burn, making her wince in pain. She glared at him. "Get out!"
