The Aurea Club sat right in the heart of Kingswood City. Its fourth floor was strictly off-limits to the public.
Tonight, Chloe Banks had been 'invited' up to this exact floor.
Sweat beaded on her forehead and soaked through the back of her shirt. Two massive bodyguards flanked her, forcefully shoving her through the door of a private room.
The lighting inside was heavy and dim, with only a warm, yellow spotlight casting a hazy glow over the center.
A man slouched casually into the dark leather sofa. His tailored shirt sharply highlighted the broad, powerful lines of his shoulders and back. A cigarette was pinched lightly between his fingers, his hand resting lazily on the armrest. With every flicker of the ember, a thin ribbon of pale smoke drifted up, curling past his sharply defined jawline.
His eyes were half-lidded, mixing sheer exhaustion with a dangerous kind of indifference. In the dead silence of the room, his suffocating, aristocratic aura dominated the space, cold and terrifying.
Even in the dim light, Chloe recognized him instantly.
A sudden spark of desperate joy lit up her eyes. She looked at him with almost fanatic obsession. "You were looking for me?"
The man didn't respond.
The next second, the bodyguards restrained her, forcing her thumb onto her phone sensor to unlock it.
She watched in horror as her stolen phone was handed directly to him.
The screen lit up, displaying the photos she had just acquired.
A cold sweat broke over her entire body, but she couldn't break free from the iron grip holding her down. "What are you doing?!"
Then, realization hit her like a truck. "You're doing this for Natalie?" Complete despair crashed over her. "Why? Just because she followed you around since you were kids? If I had the chance, I could have done the same! I can do everything she can!"
"Too noisy," the man said in a low, flat tone.
A bodyguard immediately grabbed a pear from the fruit platter and violently shoved it into her mouth. Chloe's face twisted in agony, instantly silencing her.
Tears poured down her face as she stared at the man on the sofa. But from beginning to end, he hadn't spared her a single glance. His eyes were narrowed, locked entirely on the photos on the screen.
