Natalie clearly remembered telling them earlier that she wouldn't be home for dinner. For Faye to ask again out of nowhere meant the question was either coming from Cecily or Hassan.
Given how their phone call had ended that afternoon, she had a strong feeling Hassan suspected she was out to dinner with Jude Sheridan.
Natalie texted back: [No. I won't be back for dinner.]
She hated making things difficult for the household staff, so she kept her tone perfectly polite.
Meanwhile, back at Sycamore Quays, the atmosphere was suffocating.
Hassan sat on the sofa, his tall, imposing figure radiating a dark intensity as he ended a phone call.
It was the second call he had taken since walking through the door.
Faye could practically feel the ice in his voice.
"Understood," he said, ending the call and looking over at her. "What did she say?"
"Mrs. Carlson said she won't be joining you for dinner."
Silence descended on the room.
Faye gave him a nervous, sideways glance.
Cecily had taken Adrian out to meet up with some old friends for dinner.
Which meant Hassan was the only person eating at the massive estate tonight. Well, him and the dog.
Hassan lowered his gaze. After a long, tense moment, he stood up and walked over to Cup, who was busy gnawing on a squeaky toy in the corner.
Cup's food bowl was supposed to stay in a designated room, but the dog was a glutton and constantly carried it around the house in search of snacks.
Where the dog went, the bowl followed.
Right now, it was sitting just a few feet away from his toys.
Seeing the man of the house actually pay attention to him, Cup instantly grabbed his bowl in his mouth, his tail wagging frantically as he spun in circles around Hassan's legs.
His little paws tip-tapped loudly against the hardwood floor.
Whether it was the annoying clicking sound or something else entirely, Hassan—who normally completely ignored the animal—walked into the pantry, grabbed a bag of premium kibble, and filled the bowl to the brim.
As the dog buried his face in the food, Hassan instinctively reached out, mirroring how Natalie always rested her hand gently on the dog's head while he ate.
Except Cup was far too obsessed with his mountain of food to care. He completely ignored the hand.
