When Natalie stepped out, several people stole glances at her.
They were secretive looks, unlike earlier when they brazenly stared at her in the open.
Natalie ignored the prying eyes, walked into the restroom, and locked herself inside a stall.
She gripped her clothes tightly and slowly slid to the floor. Gardenia knew about her family situation because Hassan had told her.
Natalie retched over the toilet, a violent wave of nausea surging up her throat.
Hassan had told Gardenia about her.
The thought of Gardenia saying she pitied her made Natalie dry-heave until her chest palpitated.
Her skin flushed, and sweat beaded heavily along her hairline, dripping down her jaw drop by drop.
A splitting pain pulsed at the back of her skull.
She had once revealed her most vulnerable self to him, and he had taken that very vulnerability and served it up as gossip to another woman, letting that woman relentlessly mock her.
This was far worse than betrayal.
If he had even the slightest sliver of affection for her, he could never have done something so cruel.
Natalie pulled some tissue to wipe her face.
A familiar voice drifted in from outside the stall.
"Oh my god, I just witnessed the craziest drama at the banquet. Mrs. Carlson was bullying the staff in public, and Ms. Sutton saw it. She went straight over to defend the employees, but then Mrs. Carlson acted like an absolute psycho and slapped Ms. Sutton twice right in the face."
"I feel like Mr. Carlson is definitely going to divorce her."
"Who could stand someone like that? Honestly, if it were me, I'd prefer Ms. Sutton too. She's gentle, smart, and resilient. She's basically the gold standard for women."
"I wonder how Mr. Carlson is going to handle this."
Natalie pressed the flush button.
The sudden rush of water echoed through the restroom.
The voice outside abruptly stopped.
