The old woman sighed. "Other people always said you were rebellious and disobedient growing up, but I know better. You've always known exactly what you wanted."
Tears fell as she stroked Natalie's hand, their hands—one aged and weathered, the other young and smooth—layered together. "I know that once you make up your mind, no one can change it. Just like when you decided to marry Hassan."
Natalie choked out a small sob and hugged her tight. "It'll be over soon, Grandma, don't worry. Just focus on getting better."
She forced a gentle smile. "Honestly, now that you know, I feel so much lighter. Because I was hiding it from you, there were so many things I wanted to tell you but couldn't."
Yvonne shed a few more tears. "My good girl. Will you tell me now?"
Natalie thought for a moment and shook her head. "How about I tell you after your surgery?"
"Hmph, you brat. You actually know how to leave me in suspense now, huh?"
"Exactly! So you have to get better quickly, otherwise you'll never know everything your granddaughter has been through lately. It's quite the dramatic saga."
Yvonne wiped her tears, her gaze suddenly turning fierce. "Bring me my phone."
As Natalie went to get it, she asked, "What do you need your phone for?"
"What for? To curse that man out, of course! How dare he treat you this way!"
Natalie hesitated, holding the phone. "Grandma, getting angry is bad for your health. Don't upset yourself."
"Give it here. If I don't cuss him out today, I won't be able to breathe through this fury."
Hearing that, Natalie was afraid holding it back would only stress her out more, so she handed the phone over. "Alright, alright. I'll listen to you. You can yell at him."
But the call rang out three times, and no one answered on the other end.
Yvonne was both furious and resentful. "What's going on? Does he know I'm calling to yell at him? He answered immediately when I called before."
Natalie forced a small smile. "He's probably in a meeting."
Just then, Natalie received a call from Cecily.
"Get to Verity Hospital right now."
"What? What's going on?"
"Hassan's been in an accident. Hurry!"
Natalie froze for a second before hanging up the phone.
Yvonne had overheard the voice on the line and let out a cold snort. "That's karma! Even God couldn't stand watching this anymore!"
Natalie looked at her grandmother. "I'm going to head over there now. I actually had the whole day off today and wanted to stay with you."
"Go. If his condition is really severe, you absolutely have to tell me so I can have something to celebrate," Yvonne said coldly.
Natalie smiled helplessly, pouring her another bowl of chicken stew. "Make sure you finish this, okay?"
"I know!"
It took Natalie a two-hour drive to reach Verity Hospital.
The two hospitals were quite far apart.
By the time Natalie arrived, Hassan was already out of surgery.
