The kiss slowly subsided, but he kept his arms tightly around her. His normally straight back was hunched as he buried his jade-like face into the soft fabric of her clothes.
The rapid beating of his heart and the trembling of his warm body revealed his utter vulnerability.
Her intuition told her he wasn't afraid of dying.
The man held her in silence, not saying a single word.
Just as Natalie was about to push him away, he shifted upward, his lips brushing against the warm skin behind her ear. "Don't push me away."
Hassan lifted a hand, pressing the back of his hand to his lips. His hand was cold, but his lips burned from the fierce kiss they'd just shared.
He kept his head lowered, the tip of his nose resting against her warm shoulder. His thumb traced her slender waist a few times before he slowly let go.
Natalie felt somewhat dazed. She asked, "What are you so afraid of?"
The man's Adam's apple bobbed, his thin lips pressed tightly together for a long time. Then, Natalie heard him choke out two words in a raspy, gravelly voice.
"Gardenia."
He shoved Natalie aside, threw off the covers, and asked frantically, "Where's Gardenia?"
Hassan ripped the IV needle right out of his arm and bolted out of the room. "Where is Gardenia?!"
Cecily, who had been standing by the door, looked horrified. "She's in the room right next door. What are you doing?! Get back in bed and take your IV!"
Hassan ignored everything, ripping the door to the next room open to find Gardenia lying on a hospital bed.
The monitors beside her showed that everything was normal.
Hassan leaned his back against the doorframe, as if all the strength had instantly drained out of him. He slid slowly down to the floor, cold sweat breaking out across his forehead and back.
Out in the hospital corridor, Rhea sat in a wheelchair being pushed by Caspian. She threw a glance at Natalie. "Oh my, look how anxious he is. Even ripped his IV out."
Hassan's eyes were heavily bloodshot with exhaustion. He pressed his knuckles against his brow, panting heavily.
Zeke stepped out of the room across the hall, also dressed in a hospital gown. Seeing Hassan, he frowned in concern and blurted out the question that had been baffling him.
"Mr. Carlson! Why would you unbuckle your seatbelt to throw yourself over Ms. Sutton during the crash?! It's incredibly dangerous without a seatbelt!"
Natalie's bag slipped from her fingers.
*Thud.*
She stumbled back two steps, the light draining entirely from her eyes.
Fear of death is basic human instinct.
