Gardenia sneered. "Since this belongs to you, you can take it back. Adrian doesn't need it, and Hassan certainly doesn't want anything of yours."

Glancing dismissively at the broken timepiece on the ground, Gardenia's tone dripped with contempt as she met Natalie's gaze. "And just so you know, I can buy them toys like this with my own money."

Crossing her arms, Gardenia took two steps closer. "That is the difference between us. You can only sit at home, relying on a man with your hand out, just to maintain your illusion of a glamorous life. I am nothing like you. Every cent I have, everything I own, I earned through my own ability. You walk away from Hassan, and you become nothing. But if I walk away from him, I'm still exactly who I am."

Natalie's eyes darkened. She stared at the shattered object on the ground and let out a soft, breathy laugh. "You'd better hold on to that thought."

She casually lifted her foot, the toe of her shoe scraping the asphalt as she kicked the watch right back. Her voice was terrifyingly calm. "It was mine. I had the guts to give it, and I have the guts to own up to it. I used to love Hassan, so I wanted him to treasure it. But now? I couldn't care less whether he lives or dies, which means this watch is completely useless to me. It's nothing but garbage."

Gardenia shot her a sharp look. "You'd better stick to your word and stay out of my way."

With that, she climbed into the car and drove off.

Natalie stared at the broken watch on the ground, making no move to pick it up.

Her phone chimed twice.

She pulled it out and saw another voice message from Jude Sheridan.

"Gardenia just reached out and told me to stop contacting you. What the hell did you do? I'm dying to know how you managed to piss her off. This is the first time she's ever demanded I cut ties with someone."

Natalie opened her car door, slid into the driver's seat, and typed back: [And yet you're still texting me? Does the lapdog actually disobey its master sometimes? Didn't she tell you to heel?]

He replied instantly, his deep, magnetic voice laced with a lazy drawl: "Even a dog wanders off the leash occasionally. You still haven't told me what you did to her. Spill."

[She just admitted straight to my face that she and Hassan are desperately in love. And you still want her after that? I'm genuinely curious—do dogs have any self-respect at all?]

[You wouldn't get it. Without her, I'm a dead man walking. Who gives a damn about self-respect?]

[So you throw away your pride just to force her to stay by your side? If you really wanted to be the ultimate simp, shouldn't you respect her wishes and make two breakfasts every morning? Oh wait, one for her, and one for Hassan.] Her text dripped with venom.
