A dull ache pricked at her heart, not a sharp, stabbing pain, but a slow, lingering sourness.
She set the pen back down.
Standing nearby, the secretary quietly exhaled a breath of relief. She had been terrified that Natalie would figure it out and cause a massive scene right there in the office.
Thankfully, from the looks of it, Natalie hadn't realized the pen was a gift from Ms. Sutton.
The secretary vividly remembered the day Gardenia had brought it in.
Gardenia had walked into the office with two pens, just like how she used to bring Hassan coffee in the old days. She casually mentioned that the store was running a buy-one-get-one-free promotion, so she figured she'd just give him the extra one.
From the moment that pen landed on his desk, Hassan had stopped using any other.
Sometimes, the secretary couldn't wrap her head around it either. Why did Mr. Carlson treat Gardenia with such fierce devotion? If she truly was the irreplaceable love of his life, a man as ruthless and decisive as him in the boardroom hardly seemed the type to just sit around and wait for years without taking action.
"It's been twenty minutes. Is his meeting still not over?" Natalie checked her watch and glanced at the secretary.
"I'll go check," the secretary replied.
She started toward the door but suddenly stopped, looking back at Natalie with hesitation. "Mrs. Carlson, please just rest here and try not to wander around. He'll be here momentarily."
Natalie caught her drift perfectly. "Don't worry. I'm not going to mess with his things. I'm the only one in here right now, so if anything goes missing, I'd be the one taking the fall."
"Right." The secretary lowered her head guiltily and slipped out of the room.
Not long after, she returned with Hassan in tow.
He walked toward Natalie, unbuttoning his suit jacket and shrugging it off before sitting across from her. "What do you need?"
"Take a look at this." Natalie handed him the prepared folder.
He glanced at the cover. It was the investment project from the Sheridan family.
