Bringing up the incident, Jude let out a cold laugh. "Hassan was at Mr. Yates' lecture with us at the time. The second he picked up your call, he completely vanished. Fixing a computer? He could have just had an assistant handle it. If you didn't know better, you'd think the world was ending."

And it didn't stop there. After Hassan found her, he dragged her straight to the university's board of directors. The students who had bullied her were summoned to the office, and from then on, they took detours just to avoid Natalie.

He had always fixed everything for her.

And she had grown increasingly dependent on him.

Jude shrugged. "When I first came back to the country, the first thing I did was stick close to you just to test his reaction..."

He took a sip of his wine, his amber eyes glinting with a dark, dangerous edge over the rim of the glass. "But, he's changed."

She gripped her glass tightly, her long fingers wrapping around the stem, and said softly, "Why are we talking about him? I came to talk about the letter your sister left behind. I checked the study, and it wasn't there. It might be at his office. You should ask Gardenia for help; she can get into his office."

Jude truly hadn't expected Gardenia to have that much free rein with Hassan.

Natalie added, "You can ask her."

Jude looked up, his amber eyes turning deep and dangerous. "She won't betray Hassan to help me."

The normally rebellious and arrogant man lowered his eyes, laughing self-deprecatingly. "She's changed, too."

She had probably forgotten everything she'd ever said to him.

That afternoon at the hospital, her final words to him had been, "Wait for me under the big banyan tree by Erudition Hall."

Jude had never known he was someone his parents could abandon at a moment's notice.

A car crash took away his sister, and with her, it took away his parents' love for him.

He lay in that hospital bed. The doctor said the crash had left him with locked-in syndrome, and there was a high chance he would never wake up.
