He began to wonder, just who was harboring such an intense crush on him? To spend three months keeping a vegetative man company—someone with that kind of dedication would surely have better prospects chasing anyone else.

He honestly never expected her to stick around for half a year.

She started talking more and more. If she zoned out in class and got called up to the whiteboard, she'd tell him about it. If she was a step too slow at the cafeteria and missed her favorite lunch, she'd tell him. Even when she forgot a tampon and had to knock on the next stall to borrow one, she would tell him that too.

She babbled endlessly.

He mentally flipped through every girl he knew and genuinely couldn't think of anyone this noisy.

During the holidays, he thought, she definitely wouldn't come.

After all, people spent the holidays with their families.

But she showed up huffing and puffing. "Who knew I'd trip over a pile of dead leaves? My new clothes are ruined! My workbook is dirty too, and now I have absolutely no motivation to do my winter break assignments. It's snowing today, so I specifically wore a winter dress that looks pretty in the snow. I wanted to take some pictures under that tree by the hospital, sigh."

She suddenly went quiet, clearly plotting something. A second later, a hand icy from the winter night pressed flat against his face.

She was blatantly bullying him!

He thought very earnestly: You little idiot, you talk so much, couldn't you at least mention your name?

Then came summer.

She began bringing him wildflowers and weeds from the side of the road.

"There are so many gorgeous flowers and plants growing in the alley behind the school cafeteria. I took a bunch of pictures to print out and stick in my journal."

A soft petal brushed gently against his nose.

It carried the faint, crisp scent of fresh grass mixed with the cool, damp earth—a light, clean, and delicate fragrance.

She said, "This little blue flower is a speedwell. I heard it brings good health and blessings."

Her voice lowered. "We both need to stay healthy and safe, okay, Jude?"
