"Just wait for my text," Natalie said, standing up. "I'm heading out."
"Bye." He raised a hand in farewell and returned to enjoying his meal.
But after Natalie left, she walked straight into the adjacent private room.
Cora had been waiting for a while.
"Why did you come early?" Natalie asked.
Cora lowered her eyes. "I was afraid I might run into Jude, so I got here ahead of time."
Natalie looked at her seriously. "Alright, I have a question for you. When the Sheridan family wanted to call off the engagement, you refused. Did you already have feelings for Jude back then? Is that why you wouldn't cancel the wedding?"
She pressed her lips together, her eyelashes fluttering as a faint blush crept onto her cheeks. "Who hasn't done stupid things when they were young? Besides, he wasn't like this back then. He used to be... pretty wonderful."
Her voice dropped slightly as she continued. "And the truth is, I never had a say in my family anyway."
Cora had always been the invisible child in her family. She had an older brother groomed for heavy responsibilities and a younger brother who was thoroughly spoiled. Stuck in the middle, she was just a ghost, expected to yield to both of them.
She had no agency over her own marriage.
Otherwise, when Jude wanted to cancel the engagement, she wouldn't have tried to force him, even if she did love him.
She had felt incredibly humiliated back then.
But her family had ordered her to do whatever it took to maintain the alliance.
