Inside the bedroom, Natalie wrenched her hand free, looking up at him with sheer defiance.

Hassan laughed, though there was no humor in it, only frustration. "You just have to know, don't you?"

"Yes." Thinking of Coralie, her eyes grew red.

Seeing her like this made his chest tight, and his tone grew heavier. "I've already told you everything you need to know. It is exactly what you think it is. There is no other hidden reason."

"Everything I need to know?" Her nose stung, and her voice cracked with emotion. "Which means there are things I'm *not* supposed to know."

Hassan let out a heavy sigh, placing his hands on Natalie's shoulders and pulling her against his chest. "It's all in the past. Why do you insist on digging it up? Can't you just look forward?"

Ever since she found out about Coralie, Natalie had been physically and mentally exhausted. Right now, she had no strength left to fight him off, even though the image of him and Gardenia earlier made her stomach churn with assumptions about what they had been doing.

Tears pooled in her eyes and slowly traced down her porcelain cheeks.

Hassan's gaze rested on her, and without thinking, he reached up, his thumb gently brushing a stray tear from her eyelashes.

"Coralie's situation is a closed chapter." He tightened his arms, pulling her into a full embrace, his warm palm pressing against her spine. "Natalie, I'm still here with you."

That last sentence was murmured with such tender affection, his deep, magnetic voice vibrating like the hum of a cello.

"A closed chapter? My best friend is dead, and I didn't even remember! I... I spent all this time thinking she was alive and well, believing that even if we drifted apart, she was out there living her life..."

The emotions that had been bottling up all day finally shattered her control, and she broke down sobbing. "How can I just close the chapter!"

Her fragile frame trembled violently, her voice choked with sobs. She looked like a delicate leaf being violently battered by a storm, devastatingly vulnerable.
