Embarrassingly, her stomach chose that moment to rumble again.
Suzie fell silent. Should she eat? Get her strength back and then figure out a plan?
As her thoughts drifted, a spoonful of nourishing soup suddenly appeared before her eyes. She blinked her long lashes, her gaze traveling up the hand holding the spoon to Jamie's handsome face.
Feeding her? On any other man, the gesture would have been accompanied by a gentle smile. But Jamie’s expression was so grim, one might believe he was offering her poison.
“I can feed myself,” Suzie said coolly, ignoring the spoon hovering in mid-air as she took a seat.
She suddenly noticed how low the neckline of the silk nightgown was and quickly covered her chest with her hand.
The next moment, she saw the spoon being tossed into a nearby trash can, and Jamie strode briskly toward the door.
Suzie was speechless again. Who on earth did he get that terrible temper from?
His grandfather Richard was so kind and cheerful, always laughing and full of life. And she had met his father, Tobin Baylor, a few times. He was reserved, but always a gentleman. So where did Jamie get it from?
Suzie mouthed curses at his retreating back, though no sound escaped her lips.
“The marks on Mrs. Baylor’s face and neck were inflicted by Lexi from Mirage Studio,” Aaron began. “This all started with the first photography contract Lexi received from Baylor Group—the one you previously authorized Chloe to arrange. Right before the shoot, Lexi was suddenly hospitalized, and the studio owner assigned the job to Mrs. Baylor instead. Although Lexi officially got the credit, Mirage Studio gave Mrs. Baylor seventy percent of the bonus. This caused Lexi to resent her.”
Aaron paused, flipping through the file in his hands before continuing. “Then there's the second contract, the one currently in progress. You didn't authorize Chloe to arrange it, but she signed with Mirage Studio on her own and designated Mrs. Baylor as the lead photographer. I suspect…”
Aaron trailed off, hesitating. His investigation made it perfectly clear that this was a premeditated setup orchestrated by Chloe from the very beginning.
Aaron glanced intermittently at Jamie, who stood before a bookshelf. The cigarette between Jamie’s fingers burned with a long ash, suggesting he was deep in thought. He hadn't flicked it into the ashtray.
Just as Aaron was about to speak again, he heard Jamie say, “Don't speculate. Just state the facts. Tell me everything.”
