But given Jamie's baffling maneuver, he really wasn't sure if 'everyone' included Chloe.
A baffled Aaron stood frozen, a look of pure bewilderment on his face.
Jamie rubbed his temples and snorted. “Everyone! Is that clear?”
“Yes!” Startled by his sudden shout, Aaron’s back went rigid. He replied with a single word, not wanting to risk irritating him further.
But just as he reached the door, Aaron remembered another pressing issue and spoke up again, bracing himself. “Mr. Baylor… about the paternity test, I've made the arrangements. For confidentiality, I've asked a specialist from Mistholm to come. He'll arrive at the international airport the day after tomorrow at 2 PM.”
Before Jamie could reply, Aaron heard voices outside. He reacted instantly, pulling the study door open.
Not far from the doorway stood two maids and another person—Chloe!
Aaron's eyes swept over them. The two maids were clearly out of breath. With his sharp intuition, Aaron pieced together the scene: Chloe had tried to rush upstairs, and the maids had been chasing after her to stop her. His first concern was whether Chloe had overheard his conversation with Jamie.
“Aaron? Where's Jamie? Is he in there?” Seeing Aaron, Chloe bypassed the maids and trotted over to him. Perhaps because she knew Jamie was inside, her tone was polite and gentle.
“Ms. Lockwood, Mr. Baylor and I are discussing business. Please wait downstairs for a moment,” Aaron said, his voice firm but respectful.
As soon as he finished, Chloe shot him a look of disgust. With her back to the maids, she ensured that only Aaron saw it.
Aaron pursed his lips in concern. The air around Jamie was thick with smoke, and his eyes were dark and heavy. Had he… lit another one?
Seeing Jamie’s expression, Aaron was suddenly reminded of an important matter that had come up shortly after Jamie’s accident in the mountains. He spoke directly. “Mr. Baylor, what should we do about Oliver? The police haven't identified any suspects in his parents' deaths, but he’s insisting to them that you were the one who had them killed. This…”
When the police had come to question him recently, Jamie had worn the same somber, brooding expression.
Aaron sighed softly. Given everything with Suzie, it was a miracle Jamie hadn't gone after Oliver already. And now Oliver had the nerve to turn around and accuse him?
As Aaron stewed in his thoughts, he heard Jamie's hoarse voice. “Leave it for now. Go.”
