Suzie stared at Sabrina’s evasive eyes. Though she was skeptical, she wanted to hear what Aaron had to say first.
She turned her attention back to him. “Aaron,” she asked gently, “are you saying you have evidence that points to Lexi?”
Aaron hesitated, his eyes darting toward Jamie. In the study earlier, Jamie had been adamant that Suzie should compensate for the multi-million dollar equipment. But now, he was acting so warm and tender toward her. It could all be an act, a way to get back at his ex-wife, which made a certain kind of sense. And yet, the affection in Jamie's gaze seemed genuine; his eyes hadn't left Suzie since she came downstairs.
Aaron was utterly baffled. After some thought, however, he decided it was best to stick to the orders Jamie had given him when he was being serious.
“What happened yesterday was sudden and chaotic,” he replied deferentially. “I brought everyone involved to get a clear picture of the situation.”
Suzie watched him intently. Something in her gut told her he was lying. She couldn't help but steal a glance at Jamie, who was looking at her with a meaningful expression. She hadn't seen any exchange between him and Aaron, but something felt off.
Chloe, however, felt a slow-burning sense of triumph. When she had first seen Mia and the others being brought in by Aaron, she had feared the worst, assuming Mia had tattled to Jamie. After all, Mia had witnessed everything. With Aaron's resourcefulness, he would have easily discovered that Sabrina and Zina were her plants.
But now, it was clear that Aaron was lying to Suzie. It could only mean one thing: Jamie still cared for her. Why else would Aaron conceal the truth unless Jamie had ordered him to?
What did surprise Chloe was that Jamie had already bailed Suzie out and even moved her into the Baylor Manor, where they were now playing the part of a loving couple. Did he want to get back together with Suzie?
Lexi’s head snapped up, her face a mask of shock. She shook her head violently. “Not me! I didn't plan it! That really wasn't me!”
“Then who was it?!” Suzie demanded.
“It was…” Lexi started to answer, her eyes flickering nervously toward Chloe.
Chloe immediately raised her voice, her tone sharp with indignation. “Why are you looking at me? Are you trying to say I planned it? I don’t even know who Josie is! Lexi, don’t be a fool.”
