Margaret continued to screech, “Stable?! David, you call that pathetic revenue stable? Let me tell you something. Starting today, you’d better figure out a way to find that little tramp Suzie. She had a life of luxury and threw it all away. She was fine just a few days ago, wasn't she? A man like Jamie was treating her so well, and she still wasn't satisfied? Why did she have to run?! I thought with her back at the Baylor Manor, our family could finally live a good life again. Now look! She’s trying to kill me with stress!”
David heaved a heavy sigh and muttered, “All you ever think about is money, money, money. Aren’t you tired of living like this?”
At his words, Margaret nearly exploded. “I only think about money?! And who am I getting that money for?! You ungrateful bastard! It’s bad enough you don’t think about our children’s future, but you have the nerve to criticize me? How did I ever end up marrying such a pathetic loser?!”
Ruby, wiping her tears, looked at her parents' ugly fight and cried out, “Stop it! Just stop fighting! My brother and I don’t have to study abroad. We can stay here…”
*Smack!*
Before Ruby could finish, Margaret’s palm struck her cheek. “What kind of nonsense are you spouting? You’re only a year away from graduating and getting your degree, and you want to just quit?! All the dignity I swallowed, begging the Baylor family for money, would be for nothing!”
Ruby stared at her mother with a look of heartbreak and despair, then turned and ran out the door, tears streaming down her face.
Margaret pointed at Ruby's retreating figure, trembling with rage. She sank to the floor and began to wail dramatically. “No one has it harder than me! I work so hard for this family, and what do I get in return? A nest of vipers! How am I supposed to go on? I might as well just die!”
David watched her theatrics, his brow furrowed in disgust. He slowly got up to walk away.
