A heavy thumping sounded against her window.
Still reeling from the impact, Suzie pressed a hand to her forehead and hit the button to roll down the glass.
"I am so sorry, I was driving way too fast. Are you hurt?"
Hearing the voice, Suzie slowly straightened up and looked at the man outside. She froze instantly. It was Chester, Jamie's friend. The same man who had been with Suzanne.
She prayed silently that he wouldn't recognize her.
But Chester leaned down, practically shoving his head into her car. "Suzanne!" he shouted.
The sheer volume of his voice made her ears ring.
She gasped, the sharp pain in her forehead flaring up.
"You are bleeding. I am taking you to the hospital," Chester declared. He reached through the open window and unlocked her door.
Before she could process his words, he unbuckled her seatbelt, looking as if he was about to physically carry her out of the vehicle.
Suzie immediately waved him off. She grabbed her purse and slowly climbed out of the car on her own.
Undeterred by the rejection, Chester reached out to support her arm, his face etched with worry. "Take it easy. Does anything else hurt?"
The moment her feet hit the pavement, Chester began guiding her toward the sidewalk.
"My car," Suzie started.
"My assistant will handle the insurance and the tow. You need to see a doctor right now," Chester interrupted.
He hailed a passing cab and carefully helped her into the back seat.
He urged the driver to step on the gas, constantly checking to see if she was feeling nauseous or dizzy.
Suzie simply waved her hand dismissively and stayed quiet.
Once they arrived at the emergency room, Suzie pulled her driver's license from her bag and handed it to Chester.
Suzie looked at him with calm eyes. "Did you read my name, sir? I am not the Suzanne you are looking for."
Chester nodded, showing no outward signs of disappointment. His tone remained warm.
"I saw. But I am the one who caused your injuries, so I will take full responsibility for your care."
Suzie broke eye contact and didn't reply. She quickly pulled her phone from her purse.
But the screen was completely black and unresponsive.
Suzie looked around anxiously, shifting as if she were about to stand up.
Chester noticed the broken device in her hands. "Is the battery dead? Give me a second."
He stepped out of the cubicle and returned moments later with a charging cable.
"Thank you," Suzie said, offering him a fleeting glance.
