Aaron Stillman had just arrived at the door with a gift basket when he saw Margaret standing with her hands on her hips, hurling insults at Stewart Sterling, who was lying in the hospital bed.

"You are such a disappointment! Ever since you got back from studying abroad, look at you—how much trouble have you caused?! How many messes have you made?! Your father's pathetic little company barely makes a dime; it can't survive your reckless spending! What kind of shady business did you get yourself into this time to get beaten up like this?!"

Aaron paused and quietly observed through the window panel on the door.

Stewart had been patched up. He was wearing a medical neck brace, his head was wrapped in bandages, and one leg was in a cast, suspended in the air. Yet, he seemed completely unfazed by Margaret's furious shouting.

"Mom, will you shut up?" Stewart complained impatiently. "My ears are bleeding from your nagging. My head hurts..."

Margaret pointed a trembling finger at Ruby. "You ungrateful brat! Was it easy raising you? Your brother is in trouble, and you think you shouldn't help? He's the only son in this family! Could you really just stand by and watch him get dragged away by bad people? If it weren't for your brother, do you think you ever would have gotten to go study abroad?"

Ruby covered her stinging cheek in disbelief, tears welling up in her eyes. She glared at Margaret, her lips trembling. "I knew it! I knew you didn't send me abroad for my future! You just didn't want Stewart to be lonely over there!"

Panting heavily with emotion, Ruby continued to sob and yell, "In the past, you stole Suzie's salary and leached off her husband's family. Now that she's gone, you won't even spare your own flesh and blood! How did I end up with a mother like you?! And another thing! That marriage arrangement you made for me recently? I refuse! I'd rather die than agree to it!"

With a final sob, Ruby turned and bolted out the door.
