Before she could turn it, his hand clamped around her arm, pulling her back. "Suzie, you trust me, don't you?" his voice was low and tight. "When you woke up and realized your clothes were changed, your first thought wasn't that I took advantage of you. Was it?"

He stared into her eyes, a deep sorrow swimming in his gaze. "I know you hate me. Tell me what I have to do to make that hate go away. Whatever you ask, I'll do it."

A sarcastic smile touched her lips as she met his gaze. "Tell me, Mr. Baylor, did your amnesia miraculously cure itself overnight? Did a guardian angel fly down and heal you? You're even more childish than I thought."

He kept his composure. "I wasn't faking it. The doctors said my memory could return in a matter of days. Though, honestly, I wish we could go back to the very beginning. Back to when we first met."

His grip on her arm tightened slightly as he added with absolute solemnity, "I put you through too much pain in the past. I left you to face everything alone for years... I'm so sorry. Please, let me make it up to you. For the rest of our lives."

She stared at him, her eyes hollow. Flashes of their past rushed through her mind like a runaway train. When she had loved him with everything she had, he had been ice. Now that she felt nothing, he was burning with desperation.

After a quiet moment, she firmly pushed his hand off her arm. "Do you know what this is called, Jamie? It's called being shameless."

She let out another bitter laugh. "As for hating you? Don't flatter yourself. You never seem to understand a word I say, so let me make it crystal clear: I do not love you. And because I don't love you, there's no room for hate. You and I are exactly like every other divorced couple out there. Just an ex-husband and an ex-wife on paper. Nothing more."

Without looking back, she walked out the door.
