"What did he want with you?" Jamie asked softly once they were alone.

Suzie remained silent for a moment before replying in a flat tone, "You put that man in the hospital. If he presses charges and it goes to court, I'll testify for you."

"Oh? Is that so?" Jamie began slowly rolling up his sleeves, his voice entirely unbothered. "I doubt we'd win. It wasn't exactly a Good Samaritan act, and I can't claim self-defense either. Plus, I didn't hold back. His injuries are going to be extensive."

Her expression tightened, her hand gripping the strap of her bag hard. "Then... what's going to happen?"

She had never been in a physical fight, let alone a lawsuit. She didn't know the legal intricacies, but she knew that beating someone half to death could very well lead to serious prison time.

As a heavy frown settled on her face, Jamie's deep, slightly hoarse voice broke her train of thought. "Are you worried about me?"

She shot him a look. Despite his bloodshot eyes, there wasn't a trace of panic or fear in his face. He looked as calm and authoritative as ever, though a faint glimmer of amusement danced in his gaze.

Looking away toward the decorative rock garden nearby, she answered coolly, "It involves me, so naturally, I have to ask."
