The situation had instantly escalated from a hostage crisis to a potential mass-casualty arson.
Jamie gripped his phone. "Suzie, how much battery do you have left?"
"Plenty. Seventy-five percent!"
"Good. Do not hang up. Put it on speaker and set it down if your arm gets tired."
"Okay..." Suzie whispered.
She hugged her knees to her chest, trembling. *Smoke.* Why had Jamie specifically warned her about smoke? Were they going to set the place on fire?
She listened to the chaotic noise filtering through the phone—shouts, sirens, the static of police megaphones.
Outside the building, the tactical commander grabbed his radio. "The hostages near the front are being pushed further inside. I need the architectural blueprints for this block, immediately!"
Jamie assessed the building. The front entrance was a death trap. The commander was clearly looking for a blind spot to breach.
He had come out here alone, without Aaron or his security detail. Right now, he was at the mercy of the police's tactical plan.
