The fire was monstrous, roaring with a terrifying ferocity.
A violent shiver racked Suzie's body, and all the color drained from her face.
If Jamie hadn't called exactly when he did, she would have tried to sneak around the fight and make a run for the main entrance. With the panicked mob crushing against the locked doors, she easily could have been trampled—or trapped right in the epicenter when the gasoline ignited.
She had no idea what nightmare was currently unfolding inside, but she knew the store was packed with highly combustible plastics. The speed at which that fire spread was unfathomable.
Her gaze instinctively drifted to Jamie. He was also staring at the inferno, a heavy pulse jumping in his jaw, sweat gleaming on his neck.
"Don't look. You're safe now."
Jamie turned back to her, his voice a low, grounding rumble. He reached out, took her trembling hands, and completely enveloped them in his own large, warm ones.
Suzie was so paralyzed by the horrific realization of how close she had come to dying that she didn't even notice he was holding her hands.
It wasn't until she felt the soft pressure of his lips against her knuckles that she snapped out of her daze.
She yanked her hands back and stumbled to her feet in a panic.
Jamie stood up with her, clearing his throat smoothly. "Let's go. It's not safe to breathe this air. We'll leave your car where it is; it's not blocking the fire trucks."
Her mind a chaotic mess, Suzie followed him down the sidewalk until they were well out of sight of the smoke. She suddenly stopped, keeping her eyes fixed firmly on the ground.
"I... I can get a cab home from here. Thank you for everything."
It was the softest, most genuine tone she had used with him since she returned.
