In the middle of absolute terror, he had remained perfectly calm, guiding her to safety. While she was locked in that restroom, hyperventilating in the dark, he had talked her through the panic.
He knew there was a maniac with gasoline in that building. The police had literally ordered him to evacuate, but he had stood his ground, looked them in the eye, and told them he wasn't leaving without his wife.
Suzie squeezed her eyes shut and shook her head, trying to dislodge the thoughts.
She refused to admit that something inside her had shifted. It was just gratitude, she told herself. If anyone else had pulled her out of a burning building, she would feel the exact same overwhelming gratitude.
Soon, Jamie returned. A waitress followed close behind, setting an iced latte in front of him.
He slid into the booth without a word, his expression unreadably tense.
Suzie could tell the phone call had delivered bad news, but it wasn't her place to ask.
Though she remained silent, the icy walls she normally threw up around him had thawed significantly. Without a word, she slid the Creamy Peanut Pudding across the table toward him.
Jamie picked up a spoon and began to eat. "Thank you."
Suzie's mind was a whirlwind.
Aside from the fact that he had just saved her life, Aaron's dire warning from that morning kept echoing in her head. If the Baylor patriarch and Jamie's parents found out about the triplets, they would unleash hell to take them from her.
The only person who could possibly hold them back was the man sitting across from her.
Her heart ached at the thought. She had begged him before to let her go. When the inevitable custody war began, would he actually step aside? Would he stand between her and his family to protect her rights as a mother?
