A long time passed before the sobbing in the room finally subsided.
By the time Suzie lifted her head, her eyes were red and swollen. Ignoring her own tear-streaked face, she cupped Eleanor's cheeks and gently wiped the older woman's tears away with her thumbs.
"No more crying. We're done crying," Suzie whispered. She wanted to call her "Mom," but the word got caught in her throat. It still felt too unfamiliar.
Eleanor clutched Suzie's hands. It took her a moment to compose herself before she spoke. "Suzie, you should thank Mr. Baylor. If it weren't for him, I'm afraid... I would have died without ever knowing my poor child was out there."
As soon as the words left her mouth, she started crying again.
Suzie had no choice but to comfort her while forcing herself to look at Jamie. Mustering a solemn tone, she said, "Thank you."
Jamie just offered a faint smile and a slight nod before signaling the server to start bringing out the food.
Suzie couldn't help but wonder. Based on how her mother had just referred to him as "Mr. Baylor," it seemed Eleanor didn't know the truth about her and Jamie's current relationship.
She shot a questioning glance at Hayden. Catching her drift, Hayden gave a subtle shake of his head.
So, neither of them had told their mother about her history with Jamie.
The dishes began to arrive. Eleanor slowly stepped out of her sorrow, a warm smile gradually lighting up her face.
Throughout the meal, she doted on Suzie—putting food on her plate, wiping her mouth—treating her like a precious child.
Hayden, too, was even more attentive than before. It was as if both of them were desperately trying to make up for lost time.
Basking in all this newfound warmth, Suzie found herself tearing up again and again. She barely even tasted the food.
