Just then, Mia hurried back in with two cups of coffee, placed them down respectfully, and scurried out again.
Celia glanced at the cup but made no move to pick it up. Suzie could see the unmistakable disdain in her eyes.
Ignoring it, Suzie calmly picked up her own cup and took a sip.
After a brief silence, Celia cleared her throat.
"When you two got married, his father and I didn't interfere. When things fell apart and you divorced, we didn't interfere either. But what I don't understand is, it's been years. What is the meaning of all these recent headlines? Regrets? Are you trying to claw your way back into the Baylor family?"
Her voice began to rise.
"Have you seen what they're writing? 'My son has no standards and dates plastic surgery girls.' 'My son acts like a desperate lapdog.' You've completely ruined his reputation! He might not care, but people of my generation still value our dignity. Do you have any idea how many old friends have called me asking about this mess?"
It all clicked. Celia was here to interrogate her.
Suzie paused for a moment, then calmly replied, "I was secretly photographed for those headlines too. I am also a victim. You should tell your son to sue the paparazzi, the writers, and the media outlets involved."
Celia offered a tight, patronizing smile. "That's not my point, and you know it. Do I need to spell it out for you?"
Suzie smiled serenely. "Apparently, I'm missing something. Please, enlighten me."
"My point is," Celia snapped, "when you break things off, they should stay broken. Stop dragging him into your mess. After all... you're the one who thought he wasn't good enough for you, right? You have your new man, and eventually, he'll find someone new too."
Suzie faltered slightly. It seemed Richard had informed them of the divorce, but they had somehow gotten the impression that Suzie had cheated first and wronged Jamie.
