Suzie frowned and headed to the restroom.
Mia wasn't entirely wrong. Suzie had no problem firing back at strangers, but Jamie's parents hadn't actually done anything maliciously wrong to her from start to finish. Plus, she had technically left Celia waiting for an hour.
While Celia's words carried an accusatory tone, she had restrained herself from saying anything outright vulgar, likely due to her refined status.
If this had been Margaret accusing Suzie of cheating on her son, the woman would have been screaming the most vile obscenities imaginable.
After leaving the restroom, Suzie lingered in the hallway for a while to kill time before heading back to her office.
Just as she reached for the handle, she heard Jamie's voice through the door.
"Alright, Mom, it's time for you to go home. Please don't show up here unannounced again, and don't speak ill of Suzie. I'll explain everything to you when I get home. Bottom line: I am marrying Suzie, and nothing is changing that."
Then came Celia's hushed, furious voice. "Son, have you lost your mind?! She betrayed you, and she had another man's children! You—you're either brain-damaged or she's cast some kind of spell on you!"
"Fine, fine. I'm under a spell. Now please, go home. Grandpa will be descending the mountain in a few days. Do me a favor and start planning his birthday banquet, okay?"
Hearing the faint sound of a playful pat and approaching footsteps, Suzie scrambled to hide in the adjacent room.
She stayed out of sight until the sharp clicking of Celia's heels faded down the hall.
But when she finally pushed open the door to her office, she found Jamie still sitting there.
Shooting him an icy glare, she marched straight to her desk and sat down. "Your mother told me to stop pestering you. So hurry up and get out."
Jamie let out a bitter laugh, moving to sit in the chair opposite her desk. "I'm sorry," he said sincerely. "I called and told her to go home. I never expected her to come straight here. She didn't bully you, did she?"
