Once the clerk had the devices in hand, she shoved them into the woman's face, her tone dripping with sarcasm.
"Cash? Credit? Apple Pay? Here you go, go ahead and pay! Let's see what other pathetic excuses you can come up with."
Staring at the devices, the woman's face drained of color, turning a sickly, flushed purple.
To anyone watching, it was the exact look of someone who couldn't afford to pay. Naturally, it only seemed to confirm that she had fully intended to steal the scarves.
Mia nudged Suzie with her elbow, whispering, "Can you even resell stolen scarves for that much money? Or does she need them for something else?"
Suzie shook her head, pulling her gaze away to look back at the clothes.
"Suzie, these two outfits are perfect. Let's just pay and get out of here. It's getting too chaotic," Mia said.
"Alright."
As they approached the register, the group of clerks a few feet away were still aggressively berating the woman.
The intern who had just brought the scanner scurried behind the counter. Hearing that there were paying customers, the aggressive clerk's demeanor instantly shifted to a bright, customer-service smile as she hurried over to assist them.
Her movement cleared the line of sight for the accused woman. Amidst the relentless verbal abuse from the remaining staff, the woman's eyes locked dead onto Suzie.
Catching the stare, Mia tugged on Suzie's sleeve. "Suzie, do you know her?"
Suzie glanced over, met the woman's eyes for a second, and looked away. "No. I don't."
"Then why is she looking at you like she knows you?"
