Just then, one of the sales associates finally called the cops. Seeing this, Suzie pulled Mia aside and whispered, "Stop recording her. She might try to frame us for assault later. The police should be here any minute."
"Got it," Mia replied, then muttered under her breath, "What a psycho. Talk about absolute bad luck."
Mia noticed the woman was still clinging desperately to Suzie's leg. Worried that Suzie would get tired from standing, she pulled up a chair for her. Suzie was feeling drained by the commotion anyway, so she sat down to wait.
Nearby, a few sales associates were still whispering and gossiping. Suzie shot them a cold glare. "If you don't want a customer complaint that gets you fired, I suggest you keep your mouths shut."
That shut them up instantly.
A few minutes later, two police officers walked in. After getting a quick rundown from the staff, they looked at Suzie, then down at the woman on the floor. "Name? Let go and stand up."
The woman didn't say a word, nor did she loosen her grip. A clerk quickly picked up a dropped wallet and handed it to the officer. He pulled out an ID, compared it to the woman's face, and said, "Cynthia, right? We just spoke with the staff. You stole twenty-six thousand dollars' worth of merchandise. You need to come with us."
Only then did Cynthia speak. She released one hand, pointed directly at Suzie, and said, "Officer, it was her! She's the one who told me to steal it!"
Suzie immediately fired back, "Officer, I don't even know this woman." She quickly recounted exactly what had happened.
The officer listened, then turned to the staff. One of the associates shrugged. "They're both just customers. One says they know each other, the other says they don't. We have no idea who's telling the truth, so we can't testify either way."
The officer looked sternly at Cynthia. "You do realize that filing a false police report and framing someone is a crime, right?"
