The Years Between Signing and Seeing novel Chapter 623

Cynthia's expression turned devastatingly mournful. "My father-in-law, my husband, and Lucy—all three of them had heart disease. My mother-in-law couldn't work. I was too busy taking care of the kids and my sick husband, so the entire financial burden fell on Lucy. Before she had her final heart attack, she was suffering from severe chest pains. She kept telling me it was karma catching up with her."

Leaning closer to Suzie, she continued, "I kept pressing her until she finally confessed. A few years ago, she was working at the Baylor Manor, taking care of a pregnant woman. The pay was incredible—enough to support our whole family and keep everyone supplied with their daily medications. But then my father-in-law had a sudden attack, and we desperately needed a massive sum of money."

"Right around that time," Cynthia went on, "a woman approached Lucy. She offered her a huge payout to tamper with a paternity test—to swap out the samples and fake the results. The pregnant woman she was talking about was you."

Suzie forced down the chaotic storm brewing in her chest and asked as calmly as she could, "Who was the woman?"

"Lucy said it was a woman she once saw begging the man of the house on her knees at the Baylor Manor, crying hysterically."

Suzie understood immediately. If it wasn't Chloe Lockwood, who else could it be? Her hands instinctively clenched her shirt as a surge of pure hatred rushed through her.

"Lucy told herself that you clearly didn't want to stay married to Mr. Baylor," Cynthia added heavily. "She justified it by thinking she was actually doing you a favor, so it wasn't really a sin."
