Just as Hayden finished speaking, Caden's frantic shout rang out from downstairs. Hayden immediately yanked the door open and sprinted down the stairs, with Suzie quickly following behind.
Seeing them, Caden yelled, "Vivian fainted! Hayden, pull the car around! We need to get her to the hospital!"
"On it!" Hayden rushed to the sofa, scooped Vivian into his arms, and sprinted out the door. The Lockwoods didn't even have time to say goodbye before rushing out after him.
Eleanor scrambled to her feet in a panic. "Caden, go get the driver from the back! We need to follow them!"
But as she turned toward the door, she saw Suzie standing awkwardly at the bottom of the stairs, and her heart broke all over again.
She hurried over and grabbed Suzie's hands, her voice choking with tears. "Your father and I are just going to check on her, and then we'll be right back. Please don't overthink this, okay?"
"She's right, honey," Caden added gently. "We just need to handle the fallout of this situation. Don't let your mind wander."
Not wanting to add to their stress during a medical emergency, Suzie quickly nodded. "I understand. Go. I'll head home for tonight, and I'll come visit you both after work tomorrow."
"Okay. Good girl." Eleanor gave her a tight hug before grabbing Caden's arm and rushing out the door.
With their departure, the previously chaotic mansion descended into an eerie, suffocating silence. The only sound left was the slow, rhythmic ticking of the grandfather clock.
Suzie felt entirely hollowed out, followed by a sudden, inexplicable wave of intense sorrow.
She slowly sank onto the staircase, fighting the burning sensation in her eyes to keep the tears from falling.
