The Years Between Signing and Seeing novel Chapter 629

Jamie didn't answer. He simply grabbed her hand and led her outside. "I'm taking you home."

It was a good thing he had been uneasy about the emotional fallout of tonight's revelation. He had called Hayden to check in, only to find out that the entire family had rushed to the hospital with Vivian, leaving Suzie behind in an empty house. He couldn't even remember how many red lights he had blown through to get here as fast as humanly possible.

The autumn night air carried a sharp chill, and Suzie's hands were ice cold. She weakly tried to pull her hand from his grip, but Jamie held on firmly. When they reached his car, he practically lifted her into the passenger seat, leaned over to buckle her seatbelt, and then quickly jogged around to the driver's side.

Suzie seemed to have lost all the energy to fight him. She sat completely motionless, her vacant eyes staring at the Wycliffe mansion.

As the car pulled out of the neighborhood, Suzie rolled down her window, resting her head against the frame to let the wind hit her face. Thinking the autumn breeze was too cold, Jamie rolled the window back up. Suzie instantly pressed the button and rolled it back down.

After a few rounds of this silent war, Jamie finally let out a defeated sigh.

He steered the car toward the riverwalk and pulled over by the side of the road. Getting out, he opened her door and asked softly, "Do you want to sit out here for a bit?"

Met with a gentle breeze, Suzie paused for a moment before silently stepping out of the car. Jamie grabbed his spare jacket from the trunk and draped it over her shoulders.

Seeing that she was staring out at the dark, rippling water without saying a word, Jamie pulled out a cigarette and stepped a few feet away. Lighting it, he said quietly, "Pip is eating normally again. If you ever want to see him, just let me know, and I'll take you."
