“Did I steal her job? Or, did I steal the income she was entitled to?”
Seeing the worry and confusion in Suzie's eyes, Mia quickly waved her hands dismissively.
“Of course not! As part of a team, you did everyone a huge favor. Think about it—her assistant ran off. If Mr. Young couldn't find a replacement, what would have happened to the studio? Don't overthink this, Suzie.”
Mia’s sincere, reassuring words made Suzie feel a little better. She hadn’t shown it back in the studio, but the walk to her desk had been filled with a growing sense of unease. While she despised Lexi for trying to use Josie to hurt her, the current situation left her feeling strangely conflicted. She knew landing a contract that big wasn't easy, and anyone in Lexi's shoes would probably be just as upset.
Just as she was lost in thought, she saw Lexi walking toward her with a hostile expression.
“Don't get too smug, Suzie,” Lexi said, stopping firmly at her desk. She crossed her arms, her face a mask of condescension. “The contract specifically named me as the photographer. When Baylor Group finds out that Mirage Studio secretly swapped me for an inexperienced nobody, I can't wait to see how you'll clean up that mess!”
Suzie slowly looked up, her expression unruffled. “I'm here to work and earn a living. I do what my boss asks me to do. You don't have to be so hostile toward me. As for the work itself, I don't think there will be any issues. I've studied your shooting style extensively.”
A mocking smile touched Lexi's lips. “Hah. I'll just sit back and watch your career in photography go down in flames.”
With that, Lexi turned and clicked away on her skyscraper heels, heading arrogantly toward her own office.
Harrison let go of his anger and turned to Suzie with a gentler expression.
“Just focus on your work. Don't pay any mind to the gossip.”
Suzie hesitated. “I'm fine,” she said, embarrassed. “I'm just sorry for causing you all this trouble.”
Harrison waved her apology away dismissively, offering a few more words of reassurance before heading off to attend to other matters.
