He had secured Clara total vindication.
A public apology was no small feat. The organizers were going to bleed for this.
The executives broke out in a cold sweat, drowning in regret for ever tampering with Clara's scores.
Seraphina heard the demand too, and bitterness flooded her throat.
She blinked her stinging eyes, watching the handsome man approach her, and desperately wanted to ask him—
When he demanded a public apology for Clara, did he even consider her situation? She was already drowning in scandal. Once that apology was published, she would be permanently nailed to a cross of public humiliation.
But she bit her tongue.
Because asking would strip her of her final shred of dignity.
Julian stopped a few feet away from her, shut the door, and asked coolly, "What is it?"
Seraphina stared at the physical distance between them, a fresh wave of agony hitting her throat. He used to keep her close. Now, because of Clara, he was keeping his distance.
Seeing her silence, Julian checked his watch and frowned. "If there's nothing else, I'm leaving. I have things to take care of."
*You mean you're going to find Clara?*
Seraphina felt another knife plunge into her chest.
Suppressing her tears, she lunged forward before he could leave, wrapping her arms tightly around his lean waist. Pressing her face against his back, she sobbed.
"Julian, do you not want me anymore... Do you not want me? You told me you would love me forever!"
Julian stiffened. Frowning, he reached back to pry her hands off him, his tone ruthlessly calm. "You're completely emotional right now. We'll talk later!"
"I'm not emotional! You're the one who is wrong! You broke your promise!"
Julian went silent for a moment, trying to speak as gently as possible.
"Sera, I never said those words. I only ever promised I would take good care of you. I never said I would love you forever."
Seraphina went quiet, then stubbornly tightened her grip. "It's the same thing."
"It is not."
Julian turned around to look at her.
Seraphina stared up at him, her face chalk-white, her eyes rimmed with red.
Seeing her like this, Julian couldn't help but remember the little girl from all those years ago.
He felt a flicker of pity.
Sighing softly, he pulled a handkerchief from his pocket and handed it to her. "I've made mistakes over the past few years too. I didn't clearly define my feelings for you, which led you to keep making mistakes... I apologize for that."
"But this needs to stop."
His casual dismissal hit Seraphina like a physical blow, leaving her completely disoriented.
Then, she snapped.
She violently slapped the handkerchief away. Staring at him with red, devastated eyes, she cried out, "Julian Lowell! Do you even hear what you're saying?!"
"How can you not love me? I saved your life!"
"How can you not love me?!"
