Though Alexis had made a mess, it was ultimately to defend Sheila's, or Noelle's, reputation.
Truthfully, so much time had passed that Noelle no longer held it against her. She just disliked how easily Alexis had talked about retiring.
"Alexis, what does racing mean to you?" Noelle asked as she sat back in the lounge chair and tilted her head toward Alexis, passing her a bottle of water.
Alexis' expression was serious as she replied, "Racing is my passion and my life's pursuit."
"In that case, how can someone just abandon what they love? Don't give up racing, no matter what difficulties or setbacks you face. Do you understand me?"
Alexis nodded. She had a vague feeling that Noelle had an unusual identity. She remembered the time Anne had arrogantly threatened to report her, only to back down and drop the complaint the moment Noelle intervened.
She'd asked her teammates what had happened that day, but none of them would tell her the truth. All they said was that Noelle was a mentor who truly looked out for her.
Their words had weighed on her mind, so after thinking it over, she figured she owed Noelle an apology.
"Ms. Mentor, were you once part of the racing world?"
For fear that Noelle would misunderstand, Alexis immediately explained, "I'm not prying into your past. I just feel that with how amazing you are, you wouldn't have given up on racing if nothing had happened."
From Noelle's previous attitude, Alexis could tell that she cared deeply for racing.
Noelle quietly hummed. "I once missed the most important race of my life because of an accident, so it's a permanent pain in my heart. Even now, I haven't gotten over it."
She looked up at Alexis and continued, "So, unless you have truly no choice or genuinely can't go on, I hope you never give up racing."
Alexis' eyes flickered with a trace of lost bewilderment. To her, Noelle had always been so strong and provided a sense of endless security, so it stunned her that Noelle had experienced such helpless moments, too.
Alexis immediately grew nervous. "What should we do? Should we report this incident to the head coach and have him handle it?"
"Handle what? They haven't broken any rules or laws, and they're just singing my praises. We might even look ungrateful if we complain," Noelle replied and found it laughable.
Wherever people gathered, there would always be conflicts of interest. She'd seen this coming along, but she hadn't expected the traps to be everywhere.
She looked at Alexis. "I hope that by next year, you'll be the one representing our camp at the International Grand Prix."
Alexis was instantly filled with confidence. She was currently the strongest racer in their intensive training camp, yet she'd always remembered Noelle's warning and kept herself low-key, careful not to draw attention. For now, things had been relatively peaceful lately.
While Noelle was tied up with preparations for the International Grand Prix, things were much uglier over at Lola's side.
