Chapter 127
Iris’s POV
Rowan’s head lifted from the papers on his desk. His brown eyes glanced at Shane first, then slid to me. Whatever warmth I remembered from those eyes was gone. His eyes hardened, and became cold.
“What do you want?” His voice was icy and sharp.
My chest tightened. The sound of his voice froze me in place.
I had heard him speak firmly before as an Alpha, but never like this, and never at me.
For a moment, I couldn’t breathe. My mouth opened and closed, but no sound came
out.
Rowan’s gaze sharpened. He waited for a moment, then he turned back to the papers in front of him as if I had already wasted too much of his time,. “If you have nothing to say, leave my office.”
The dismissal landed like a slap.
Out of the corner of my eye I saw a triumphant smile spread across Chloe’s face. She leaned against the doorframe as if she had already won.
“Well,” she murmured, loud enough for all of us to hear, “I hope someone finally understands their place.”
Heat crept up the back of my neck, but I forced myself to stay still.
Shane shifted beside me. “That’s enough,” he said sharply to Chloe.
She glared at him. “Watch your mouth. Besides, I’m only pointing out the obviou
“Chloe,” Rowan said without looking up. His tone carried a warning. “Quiet.”
Her mouth snapped shut, but the smugness didn’t leave her face.
I swallowed hard. My voice felt locked in my throat, almost as if I had lost the ability to speak.
I had faced Eric’s cruelty, I had survived rogues in the forest, yet Rowan’s icy indifference cut deeper than them all.
It felt worse than those nights when Eric had looked through me as if I were nothing.
A lump formed in my throat. Damn these pregnancy hormones.

I forced myself to take a slow breath and stepped forward. “Rowan,” I said quietly, “ can I talk to you alone?”
He lifted his head again. His eyes were so dark that I resisted the urge to flinch. “Whatever you can’t say here shouldn’t be said at all,” he replied sharply,
The sting of his words settled deep. For a moment, I almost turned around and walked out.
Shane glanced at me with concern on his face, but he stayed silent.
Tears welled up in my eyes, but I blinked hard. They wouldn’t show, not here, especially not in front of Chloe.
I bit down on the inside of my cheek until I was able to calm down, then I forced my voice to stay steady. “This isn’t just anything,” I said softly. “It’s important.”
Rowan’s expression didn’t soften. “Then speak.”
Chloe tilted her head, her smirk returning. “Yes, Iris. Speak.”
I wanted to tell her to shut up. I wanted to scream. Instead I took a shaky breath.
Maybe I deserved this coldness. I had shut him out that morning after that night. I had been the one to call it a mistake. Then I proceeded to avoid him, even though he was probably avoiding me too.
He was only respecting my wishes.
That thought hurt more than I expected.”
Shane stepped closer, lowering his voice. “Iris-”
“I’m fine,” I cut him off softly, though my chest ached.
I looked back at Rowan. He watched me without a single hint of emotion.
It was painful, but this was for my child. I couldn’t let my own hurt stop me.
I took in one last deep breath, then I forced the words out.
“I’m leaving,” I said.
The room seemed to freeze for a moment. Even Chloe’s smug smile faltered for a second.
Rowan’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t move. Leaving?” he repeated flatly.
