Iris’s POV

The silence was stretched so long that it felt very uncomfortable.
Rowan stared at me with an unreadable expression.
Shane shifted beside me, looking uncomfortable. Even Chloe kept quiet.
I clenched my jaw as annoyance pricked me. Fine. If that was his answer, then I was done.
I released a breath and stepped back. “Alright,” I said calmly. “Forget it.”
My voice sounded calmer than I felt.
I turned toward the door. My hand held the handle when Rowan’s voice cut through the room.
“Wait.”
It wasn’t loud, but it stopped me.
Something in his commanding tone made the hair on my neck rise.
I turned halfway, not willing to face those cold eyes. I braced myself for a sharp, cutting remark to make me regret coming at all, but nothing came.
“Shane. Chloe.” Rowan’s eyes darted to them. “Out.”
Chloe spun toward him. “Excuse me?” Her voice was sharp with disbelief. “You can’t possibly mean me—”
He raised a single eyebrow.
Whatever she saw in his face made her swallow the rest of her protest instantly
She swallowed and looked at me like she would like to skin me alive.
If it were a better time, I might have given her a smug little smile just to rub it in. B my heart was beating too hard for games.
Chloe huffed and stormed toward the door. She brushed past me with a glare so sharp it could kill.
Shane gave me a conflicted look, clearly debating whether to stay.
Rowan’s eyes flicked to him once. That was enough.

“Fine,” Shane muttered. “But I’m close by.’
He gave me a reassuring look, then followed Chloe out.
Immediately he closed the door behind him, the atmosphere in the room changed slightly.
I turned slowly to face Rowan. He was still seated with his elbows on the arms of his chair. His brown eyes were fixed on me. They were cold as before, but there was something else now, something dark.
A shiver ran down my spine.
When he spoke at last, his voice was low. “Was it that bad?”
I blinked. “What?”
His jaw tightened. “That night.”
His eyes pierced through mine. “The mistake you said you made. Was it so bad that you’re leaving the pack because of it?”
My chest tightened sharply.
I hadn’t expected that. I had thought he would stay distant, maybe lecture me about knowing my place, but not this.
A bitter laugh slipped out before I could stop it.
“That night,” I murmured quietly. “You think this is just about that?”
“You tell me,” he said, his tone was flat, but his eyes darkened.
I looked away from his scorching gaze. Memories of that night flashed in my The way his hands had traced my body, the way his eyes had burned with in as he watched me.
Heat rushed through me.
I forced down those memories.
“It’s not just about that night, Rowan.” I forced my voice to stay even. “It’s about m life. I want to change environment, start afresh.”
“That makes no sense,” Rowan said, furrowing in confusion. “What’s wrong with this place? Why are you always trying to leave?”
I bit my lower lip unconsciously. “There’s nothing wrong with this place. I just—”

He cut in. “Is there something you’re not telling me?”
My heart skipped a beat, and I resisted the urge to shift guiltily.
I sighed. “I never planned on staying here long term. I’m not a part of this pack, Rowan. Never was. I’m just a guest staying here temporarily.”
Rowan clenched his jaw. He knew I was right, and he knew that he couldn’t stop me from going because I was a guest, not a prisoner.
say. His gaze darted
He looked like he was pushing down the words he didn’t want to to the papers on his desk and back to me. Finally, he exhaled sharply.
“You’re right,” he said at last. “You’re not bound to this pack.”
His
eyes
hardened again. He picked up the papers from his desk and began arranging them in a neat pile, like they were suddenly more interesting than me. “If you’ve made up your mind, I won’t stop you.”
The calmness in his voice didn’t match how tense his shoulders were. He picked up his pen stiffly.
“I’ll send someone to take you,” he said without looking up. His voice stayed calm, but the muscle in his jaw twitched. “When do you want to leave?”
My throat tightened. This was really happening.
“Today,” I said quickly. I needed to get started on the new life I wanted to build. Time was essential.
“As soon as possible,” I added, keeping my voice steady.
His
pen stopped moving. He looked at the paper for a long moment, then nodded once. “Tonight, then. I’ll have someone ready by nightfall.”
