Chapter 63
Iris’s POV
I continued arguing with Rowan. “You can’t be serious. Him? Out of everyone here, you want him to teach me
Rowan shrugged calmly, sitting in the armchair like he had all the time in the world, with his arms crossed over his chest. He didn’t look fazed at all.
“Yes. Him,” he said smoothly, like it was the most obvious answer in the world.
I gaped at him. “Rowan, have you completely lost it? Why Lucas? You do realize he can’t stand me, right?”
“Exactly why he’s perfect,” Rowan replied.
My jaw nearly dropped to the floor. “Perfect? Are you even hearing yourself? The next thing you’ll say is that Chloe will be joining in too. Maybe I should just line up every single person who hates my guts and let them take turns beating me senseless. Would that make you happy?”
His lips twitched like he was fighting back a smile. “Don’t tempt me,” he murmured, raising an eyebrow at me.
I narrowed my eyes. “That’s not funny.”
“I wasn’t joking.”
My jaw dropped. “You cannot be serious.”
Rowan rolled his eyes. A very rare occurrence that made me pause for a moment. “There are very few people I trust to train you. Lucas is one of them.”
I scowled at him, folding my arms on my chest. “That’s ridiculous. What about Asher? He is your Beta, so he must be very trained. And guess what? He clearly likes me. He would actually care about helping me improve.”
“That’s exactly the problem,” Rowan said. His tone was firm, and patient, like he was already prepared for this argument. “Asher likes you too much. He would go easy on you, whether he means to or not.”
I narrowed my eyes. “And you think that’s a bad thing?”
“Yes,” Rowan said without hesitation. “You don’t need it easy, Iris. You need it real.”
I opened my mouth, ready to argue, but he kept going.
“And if I trained you myself I will also go easy on you because…” He trailed off, causing an odd tension in the air.
I caught a strange look in his eyes.
I stared at him, heart pounding a little faster. Why? I wanted to ask. I wanted to know what exactly he meant by that, but the look on his face made me bite my tongue.
I folded my arms tightly across my chest. “So, what, you think Lucas is your best choice? Because he doesn’t like me, I’ll magically learn faster?”
“Yes.” Rowan smirked. “Exactly.”

I blinked at him, deadpan. “That doesn’t even make sense.”
“It makes perfect sense,” he drawled smoothly.
“No, it really doesn’t!” I snapped, pointing a finger in the direction of the door where Lucas walked through. “If he hates me, he won’t want me to get better. He’ll want me to fail. Don’t you think so?”
Rowan tilted his head slightly with an amused look on his face.”I know what you’re trying to do, but it won’t work.”
My eyes narrowed. “Oh, really? And what exactly am I trying to do?”
“Convince me that Lucas won’t want the best for you, so that I will change him,” he said, his smirk deepening, like he already knew he had won this argument.
I released a sarcastic laugh. “Well, I’m not wrong. Am I?”
“Yes, you are wrong. Lucas won’t let you fail. On the contrary, he will actually work your ass off to the bone. He’ll break you down so hard that you’ll wish you were dead. And that’s exactly what will satisfy him.”
I froze, staring at him. Silence fell between us for a moment.
“I’m sorry, but are you crazy? Do you even hear yourself?” My voice sounded frantic. “Is that supposed to make me feel better? That he’s going to destroy me and enjoy it?”
Rowan nodded, looking almost cheerfully.
I blinked at him, incredulous. “You’re ridiculous. Do you also hate me? Is that it? Is this some secret plan between you and Lucas to kill me? Because if that’s the case, you might as well just toss me outside the pack borders now and save yourselves all the trouble.”
