Chapter 64
“I don’t hate you, Iris,” he said finally.
I crossed my arms tighter, glaring. “Well, you sure have a funny way of showing it.
His smirk faded slowly, replaced by a softer look. He leaned back in his chair with a small sigh.
“Look,” he said, his voice was calm. “In all seriousness… Lucas is the only person I trust to get this job done. Yes, it will be tough and even brutal. But it’s part of the process. You’ll hate it, you’ll hate him, and you’ll probably hate me too. But it will make you stronger, and better.”
I stared at him, trying to read the sincerity in his eyes, and to my surprise, he really meant it. He actually believed this was the right choice.
“You know he’ll kill me,” I muttered softly, my annoyance was turning into dread now.
Rowan stared into mine. “No. I won’t let him. I’ll make sure he doesn’t overdo it. Alright?”
My shoulders sagged. I didn’t want to give in, I didn’t want to lose this fight, but deep down I knew I wasn’t going to win against him. Rowan wasn’t just stubborn, he was immovable, like a mountain.
I exhaled slowly and gave a reluctant nod.
I was already dreading what was coming. My stomach twisted at the thought of facing Lucas again with his cold eyes and half smirk when I inevitably embarrassed myself.
A triumphant smile spread across Rowan’s lips. “Good. Your training starts tomorrow. Six a.m. sharp.”
I groaned, dragging a hand down my face. “Six? As in the middle of the night?”
He chuckled again, clearly enjoying my misery. “Don’t be dramatic. It’s not that early.”
“Easy for you to say,” I muttered. “You probably wake up before dawn to go wrestle bears or whatever it is Alphas do for fun.”
He smirked in a way that sent my heart skipping in a way that I did not want to acknowledge.
“Six o’clock,” he repeated firmly, his voice final.
I slumped back against the bed, throwing my hand over my eyes.
He chuckled.
I peeked at him from under my arm, scowling. “What are you laughing at? I’m doomed!”
He shrugged. “Maybe,”
I gave him a nasty look, and he raised his arms in mock surrender.
“Okay, okay. I’m leaving. Have fun tomorrow.” He drawled, walking out of the room with amusement in his voice.
I groaned again, as dread settled in my chest. Tomorrow was going to be hell, and I wasn’t sure I would survive it.

An ugly memory flashed through my mind. I remembered standing outside the Crescent Moon training grounds, holding Evie’s small hand as she dragged me toward the sparring ring. She had wanted to watch the warriors practice.
Eric had been there, too. But he wasn’t with us. He stood far away from us, with Zara and Tiffany beside him, laughing and having fun.
When Evie had clapped her hands and shouted for me to try it. Eric had smirked, shaking his head.
“She wouldn’t last a minute,” he had said loud enough for everyone to hear. Zara laughed with her hand on his
arm.
Evie’s little smile had faded, and my chest had ached. I had swallowed my humiliation and pulled her close, pretending it didn’t matter, and it didn’t sting.
The memory made my stomach twist.
And now Rowan wanted me to stand in front of Lucas, the man who looked at me with so much disdain like Eric, and let him tear me down too.
Lucas reminded me too much of Eric.
The thought slammed into me like a fist.
I hadn’t meant to think of that, but now that the memory surfaced, it wouldn’t leave. The way Lucas dismissed me, the flat indifference, was exactly how Eric used to look at me when I begged him for scraps of kindness. When I begged him to spend just one more hour with Evie before it was too late.
