Too Late Alpha The Mate He Never Wanted (Iris and Eric) novel Chapter 89

Chapter 89

Iris’s POV

I didn’t sleep well. Every time I closed my eyes, as the memory of yesterday’s incidents with Lucas and Chloe kept replaying over and over in my head. Even when I finally drifted off, I woke up repeatedly because of my throbbing bandaged hand.

I woke up almost an hour before 6am. My chest was tight with dread. I couldn’t risk showing up late, especially not today. I rushed as much as could, wincing as my bandaged hand brushed against surfaces in my hurry.

Shane was already waiting outside when I stepped out of the room.

“Good morning,” he murmured.

I nodded absentmindedly.

My stomach twisted with anxiety as I stepped outside, inhaling the cool air. Because of what Lucas said concerning the timing yesterday, I decided to be at the training ground at least 30 minutes early.

The training ground was quiet.

Shane walked quietly beside me. His posture was relaxed, but his eyes were sharp and alert. “ I’ll be nearby if you need anything,” he said.

“I… I don’t think I’ll need you,” I muttered, forcing myself not to sound panicked. I didn’t want him to watch as Lucas destroyed me because I didn’t want him to try to intervene in whatever happened today.

He gave me one last look then he shrugged, still choosing to follow me. My heart pounded

I took a deep breath and stepped on the field. Lucas was already there. He stood tall, and stiff with his arms crossed over his chest. His cold glare pierced through me, before I even reached him. My pulse spiked, and my stomach twisted.

“You’re late,” Lucas said sharply.

I furrowed my eyebrows incredulously.

“I…” I trailed off instantly. I was about to argue that I was here 30 minutes earlier than yesterday, but I decided not to, because it would make my issues worse with him.

He lifted an eyebrow when he realized I wasn’t going to argue with him.

“Alright,” he said, dismissing Shane with a wave of his hand. “He’s not needed here. You’re on your own.”

I stiffened but nodded.

Now that Shane was gone, I had no emotional support. It was just me, Lucas, and the training ground.

“Run two laps,” he said flatly. “Just like yesterday.”

My stomach dropped. I didn’t even question him. I swallowed and pushed my legs forward, forcing them to move as I started to run. My chest burned, my lungs screaming in pain. My bandaged hand throbbed as I ran, and sweat poured down my face. By the time I finished, my legs felt like they were made of rubber, and my heart pounded hard against my ribs.

Just like yesterday, Lucas didn’t even acknowledge my struggle. He just waited with his arms crossed, and that cold expression on his face.

I felt a strange sense of relief, because he was acting exactly the same as yesterday

We moved on to the stretches. Each muscle in my body screamed in protest as he corrected every minor slip. “Tighter,” he snapped coldly at one point. “Keep your elbows straight. Focus.”

Next we were working on stances and postures. He watched with sharp eyes, correcting me coldly. I was exhausted, sweating, and breathing hard. Not once did he glance at my bandaged hands. It was as if they didn’t exist. At that moment, it made me feel strangely secure. He wasn’t punishing me for yesterday. It meant he wasn’t letting my mistakes interfere with the lesson. He was only teaching.

Finally, after what felt like forever, we were done I collapsed to the grass, panting for air, my muscles trembling. My body was drenched in’sweat, and my lungs burned. I glanced at Lucas. His expression was still cold, unreadable as ever.

He picked up two water bottles, opened one, and took a small sip. His eyes flicked toward me, silently signaling that it was safe.

Then he handed it over to me.

“Thank you,” I muttered, taking the bottle from him. I hesitated for a split second, before I gulped it down greedily. The water was cool, and refreshing.

My heartbeat finally began to slow.

I collapsed to the ground, lying on my back. For a fleeting moment, I thought Lucas had left. I thought it was over, and that I could finally relax. Maybe he hadn’t heard what happened. Or maybe he didn’t really care, because come on, it was Chloe. Annoying Chloe. Or maybe he had silently forgiven me.

Suddenly Lucas’s words cut through the silence.

“I heard that you put my lesson to use yesterday on my cousin… and you broke her nose.”
