As I watched Kingsley drive his car and bring it around, I smiled. I couldn't even feel upset if I wanted to. I was just too happy. Even if the world turned on me right now, I wouldn't care, and I wouldn't bother to try explaining myself. Sharon could go ahead and get public sympathy. I got the man of my dreams, and that was all that mattered.
My phone began to ring again. My mom was calling. Just as Kingsley brought the car around, I answered and held up a finger to ask him for a second.
I had to pull the phone away from my ear as my mother's voice tore through the speaker.
"You fraud!" she blasted. "You brought someone else's man to show off in front of us!"
Vivian's voice came from the background. "I told you, Mom. How could someone as plain as Pat get such a millionaire? He probably owed her a favor, and she forced him to come here and act. I'm even sure all that talk about working in a big lab is a lie. Otherwise, she would have appeared even once in the news. And that pregnancy? Maybe it was from a random loser that picked her up at a bar, or even a married man's baby."
My father's voice cut in. "You are such a disgrace to this family!"
