Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 603

SERAPHINE

The red boat rose and fell against the dock, its hull the color of dried blood, and men moved across its deck like they owned the whole world. Five of them carried rifles slung across their chests. I let my hair fall across my face and walked toward the two armed men guarding the entrance. One of them stepped into my path. "Pass."

I held out Cara's pass with a steady hand I did not feel. "Cara Langley. It's my time to visit my family."

He took the pass, turned it over, checked a ledger another man held open, then nodded. "Go on."

I walked past him with my eyes on the deck, counting my steps so I would not look at anyone. Cara had warned me about this boat. She had been riding it for years, and every man on it knew her face, her cabin. If I acted like a stranger, they would know in a second. I found the door to her room and reached for the handle.

"Cara!"

My heart slammed into my ribs. I stopped with my hand frozen on the door.

Boots crossed the deck toward me. "You didn't bring any luggage this time?"

I shook my head, pitching my voice low and easy, the way Cara did as though nothing in the world could touch her. "Didn't feel like it."

There was a pause, then a low chuckle. "That's not like you."

I pushed the door open and slipped inside without giving a reply, shutting it behind me before he could say another word. My hands were shaking. I leaned against the door and breathed until my heart stopped trying to climb out of my throat. Pretending to be Cara was bad enough. Pretending to be Cara in front of men with guns was worse.

I reached into my bra and pulled out the bag of pills Cara had given me. I shook two into my palm, swallowed them dry, and tucked the bag back where it had been hiding.
