Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 619

My stomach twisted.

"For example, just because you wanted to please your friends, you allowed Scarlett to kneel before you." His voice hardened. "The moment Scarlett came up with such a ridiculous plan and told you she needed to kneel in order for you to save face before your friends, you should have said no. You should have stopped her. You should have insisted and stood your ground.

I know I wouldn't do that to someone I consider family, someone I love, just to please some random people. But you stood there and let Scarlett kneel before you. It's hard for me to think that you care about her after allowing that to happen, knowing all the sacrifices, and all the risks she's taken for you."

Each word landed like a stone in my chest. So he knew. Somehow he knew about the pool, about the kneeling, about everything. Scarlett must have told him a different version that would make him not get too mad at me.

I had misunderstood her. I had let Lucia whisper poison in my ear, and I had watched my own aunt drop to her knees in front of strangers, and I hadn't said a word.

Guilt pressed down on me so heavy I could barely breathe.

And then Big Bryan's face flashed through my mind. Maybe I should tell Sparrow. Right now he was speaking to me directly, and he didn't seem as upset as he'd been earlier. If I told him, would he work with me and bring Big Bryan down? But what if Big Bryan got wind of it and sent him the video? How would I face him?

No. I couldn't think that way. Seeing Scarlett's condition, I couldn't let her find out. The only way was to tell Sparrow. If I told him now, he wouldn't let Scarlett know. He would hunt Big Bryan down and get rid of him for good. As for the video, I just had to hope Sparrow would never see it.

He was staring at me, waiting, and I was about to speak when he tilted his head. "Is something wrong with you? I'm just noticing now that you look quite pale."
