Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 675

Sparrow was back by then, and he was not in favour.

"She should go home and sleep properly," he said, already reaching for his phone. "She has her important fitness training tomorrow."

I only I knew he was being sarcastic.

"I want her to stay," Scarlett said, in the tone of a woman signing legislation. I was surprised.

Sparrow looked from one of us to the other, jaw working, and visibly chose surrender. "Fine."

He stayed a while longer, talking to her in that low, careful voice he saved exclusively for her, and then he left, pausing at the door to look at me once, briefly, before he went.

I stayed.

The room settled into night sounds, machines humming softly, Scarlett's breathing going slow and even, the corridor lights striping under the door. I lay on the sofa bed in the dark and let my eyes close.

___

In the early hours, my phone rang.

I surfaced out of sleep with my heart already going, squinted at the screen. Daniel.

Scarlett was still asleep across the room. Sparrow wasn't there. I slid off the sofa and padded to the far side of the room before answering, my voice a whisper.

"Good morning."

"Something's wrong." No good morning back, no preamble, and his voice was tight in a way I'd never heard it. "I've been trying to book your session since yesterday. The system keeps showing you as unavailable."

"What?" I pressed the phone harder against my ear and glanced at Scarlett's sleeping shape. "Unavailable? What do you mean, unavailable? How? What does that even mean?"

"I don't know." A breath came down the line. "I have no idea what Big Bryan is up to, but it looks like he's onto you. Are you sure he didn't notice the chip you tried to insert into his phone yesterday?"
