Two Can Play (Celeste and Dominic) novel Chapter 676

The door opened and Sparrow walked in.

"Good morning." I managed it brightly.

He nodded at me, barely, and went straight past to the bed.

"How are you feeling today, dear?"

"If you really care about me, you'll let me leave this hospital." She sat up as far as the pillows allowed. "I'm fine. I've been here far too long. I want to leave this morning, not later today. This morning."

"Okay." To my surprise, he didn't argue. "But the doctor checks you one more time before we go."

He was already dialling, and the doctor arrived within minutes, did the usual ritual, then pronounced her stable enough to leave.

"Thank you, Doctor." Scarlett beamed like he'd handed her a trophy.

The discharge paperwork took less than an hour, and then we were home, and Scarlett disappeared upstairs to bathe and reclaim her own bathroom with the devotion of a woman reunited with a lost love.

"I'll make breakfast," I called after her, and got a distracted agreement from halfway up the stairs.

I freshened up quickly, still turning the booking problem over and over, and went downstairs hoping that cooking would drown out the noise in my head.

Instead I walked into a kitchen full of strangers.

Two women in whites and a tall man in an apron were already moving around the counters, chopping, stirring, filling the room with the smell of garlic and butter, like the kitchen had been annexed overnight by a small polite army.

"Excuse me. Who are you?"

"We're the new chefs, ma'am." The older woman turned, wiping her hands. "Sparrow hired us this morning."
