She looked up and saw Lauren Lennox standing a short distance down the alley. Lauren had her body turned sideways, tightly clutching a designer handbag in one hand while aggressively shoving an old woman away with the other.
The elderly woman was hunched over, her hair completely gray. Her clothes were covered in dust, making it look like she had been wandering the streets for miles.
She kept one hand suspended in the air, having just tried to grab Lauren before being violently swatted away.
"Miss, how do I get to Laurel Heights?" the old woman's voice was hoarse and raspy. "Just tell me, please. I promise I won't bother you—"
"How the hell should I know where Laurel Heights is! Can't you read a street sign?" Lauren snapped, taking a huge step back as if trying to avoid a diseased rat. "Stay away from me! You're filthy, don't you dare touch my clothes!"
The old woman flinched at the screaming, her lips trembling as if she wanted to say more.
But Lauren had already lost what little patience she possessed. She shoved the elderly woman hard. "I said get away from me! Are you deaf, you old hag?"
The old woman stumbled backward, her heel catching on the uneven pavement, and she began to fall.
Seraphina instantly rushed forward and caught the woman firmly by the arm.
The old woman weighed practically nothing. Seraphina steadied her, letting her lean safely against her shoulder.
Then she shot a glacial glare at Lauren.
"What is wrong with you?"
Lauren paused upon recognizing the newcomer, her initial shock quickly melting into intense irritation. She didn't even bother putting on her usual sweet, innocent act.
"Seraphina? Why are you always everywhere?" she scoffed. "Do you actually know this old bat? Or do you just make a habit of picking up homeless trash off the street?"
Seraphina ignored her entirely, looking down at the woman leaning against her.
The old woman stared up at her, her eyes hazy, confused, and incredibly frail.
Seraphina's voice dropped into a dangerous low register. "Lauren, she is an elderly woman."
Though her clothes were caked in dirt, the fabric was actually quite expensive. It was clear she had just been wandering aimlessly for a very long time, accumulating grime along the way.
Now, her eyes were clouded, her reactions delayed, and her words made little sense.
She was clearly a lost elderly woman. From the looks of it, she was likely suffering from Alzheimer's.
Seraphina's heart sank. "Ma'am, I'm not your daughter. Do you remember where you live? Do you know any of your family members' phone numbers?"
The old woman blinked, seemingly struggling to understand the words. After a long pause, she stubbornly repeated, "You are my sweetheart. I'm going home with you... I don't want to go back to Laurel Heights. Laurel Heights is bad. Mommy doesn't like it there..."
Seraphina allowed her to keep her desperate grip on the sleeve, making no move to pull away.
Watching Seraphina patiently coddle the woman, Lauren burst into mocking laughter. "Ugh, Seraphina, quit playing the saint. Did you hear her? She wants to go home with you. You're so lucky, you just picked up a brand-new mom."
Her tone dripped with malicious glee. "I wasn't totally sure before, but now it's obvious. This crazy old hag camps out in this alley specifically to scam people. You helped her, and now she's latching onto you. Congratulations on the new mother."
