Seraphina parted her lips.
The words caught in her throat and were swallowed back down.
The child’s eyes looked at her as if she were someone who would strip away her happiness at any moment.
That defensiveness was written clearly across the little girl's face, even from several feet away.
Seraphina remained silent.
Lily seemed to confirm that she wouldn't object. Her lips curved into a satisfied smile. "Mom, you're a little nicer today."
With that, she turned back to her cartoons, giggling.
Seraphina stood there, completely motionless.
A little nicer today.
Because she hadn't stepped in to discipline her, she was suddenly a better mother?
Taking a deep breath, she walked over to a seat at the edge of the room and sat down.
Outside the window, the thunder had completely stopped, and the rain was gradually fading.
The little girl who had called her over because she was terrified of the storm was now glued to the screen, seemingly having forgotten everything.
The nanny walked out of the bedroom and froze for a moment upon seeing Seraphina in the living room. "Ma'am, you're back."
Seraphina nodded.
She looked at her daughter on the sofa and spoke in a flat tone. "The storm is over, so I'm heading back. Go to sleep early."
Hearing this, the smile on Lily's face instantly faded a fraction.
She turned her head, looking at Seraphina. "Mom, can you stay and sleep here?"
A flicker of reluctance shimmered in those young eyes.
Seraphina spoke calmly. "If I stay, you can't watch TV anymore. You'll have to go to bed."
Lily's expression immediately shifted.
"No!" She threw her throw pillow to the side, her little face flushing red. "You're still so mean! Grandma and Yvette were right, you really are a bad mom! You don't love me at all! You're useless, and everyone makes fun of you wherever you go!"
Sitting up, Seraphina checked her phone. There were no missed calls and no new messages.
Setting the phone aside, she got up to wash, changed her clothes, grabbed her bag, and headed out.
She was going to the mall.
Since she didn't have much on her plate today, she planned to buy new clothes and completely replace her old wardrobe.
The Northport Galleria was newly opened—massive and comprehensive. The first to third floors were filled with various brand boutiques.
Seraphina browsed floor by floor, eventually purchasing all the apparel she needed.
Carrying her shopping bags out of a store, she was about to head to the fourth floor to look at home goods when she looked up and saw a familiar figure approaching.
Old Mrs. Lockwood.
The elderly woman was accompanied by two maids—one carrying shopping bags, the other supporting her arm.
The old lady wore a dark purple coat, her hair neatly styled. She looked well enough, but her energy was visibly lower than before.
