Unable to bear seeing Cynthia look so defeated, Dominic immediately reached for her hand again.
"This isn't your fault. Someone obviously whispered nonsense into the Dean's ear. The blame doesn't lie with you."
Cynthia took a deep breath, her chest rising and falling softly as she squeezed his hand in return.
"Dominic, don't worry. At the Nuclear Research Conference, I will deliver a flawless presentation and prove the strength of the Lockwood Group to Dean Vance. Believe in me."
Seeing the fierce determination in her eyes, Dominic felt a wave of tenderness and gripped her hand tighter.
"Let's go."
The two of them got into the car together.
Meanwhile, Seraphina had long since left the campus and was settled in the backseat of her ride home.
As the car merged onto the highway, the evening sky outside the window began to darken.
Leaning back against the leather seat, she took out the stone Dean Vance had given her and examined it again.
It wasn't exceptionally beautiful on the outside, but the core material was highly valuable.
Dean Vance didn't actually know much about raw ores; exactly as he had said, he only bought it because he knew she loved them and thought it looked nice.
Seraphina wrapped both hands around the stone, a comforting warmth blooming in her chest.
She pulled out the notebook next, opening it to a random page, and found herself instantly captivated.
She flipped through it page by page, her fingertips trembling slightly.
Her mentor had handed over his life's work to her without a single reservation.
Hugging the notebook to her chest, the warmth inside her lingered long into the night.
For the next few days, Seraphina spent every spare second pouring over the notebook, becoming more engrossed with every page.
Soon, the day of the Nuclear Research Conference arrived.
The event was held at the International Exhibition Center on the west side of the city. The registration line at the entrance stretched out the door, filled with the absolute elite of the domestic nuclear research field and powerful corporate figures.
Right as she arrived, Seraphina received a call from her mentor.
Dean Vance explained that an urgent matter had kept him away, but he had already made all the necessary arrangements for her and insisted she enjoy the conference.
Seraphina murmured in agreement, "Take care of your business, Dean Vance. I'll be perfectly fine on my own."
A while later, the host stepped onto the stage and began testing the microphone.
Tristan glanced over at her and let his eyes linger on her arms for a second.
The ceiling air conditioning vent was blowing directly down onto Seraphina, the icy draft raising goosebumps all along her skin.
Seraphina pulled her jacket tighter, trying her best to shrink her arms completely into the fabric.
Tristan's brow furrowed slightly. He stood up, walked to the back of their row, and reached up to manually adjust the vent's directional louvers.
The freezing air immediately shifted, blowing off into another aisle.
Satisfied, Tristan smirked faintly and returned to his seat, acting as if nothing had happened.
However, as his gaze casually swept over the section ahead and to their right, he paused.
A few rows away, Dominic and Cynthia were seated side by side.
Cynthia had her head turned, whispering something to Dominic, a soft, pleasant smile on her lips.
But her peripheral vision remained intensely locked onto Seraphina's row.
