Cynthia's expression froze in absolute humiliation.
"Seraphina, you..."
She turned a pathetic, teary-eyed gaze toward Dominic.
Dominic's face turned to thunder.
He stepped in front of Cynthia, shielding her. "Shut your mouth, Seraphina."
Seraphina gave him a look of pure disgust and turned her back on him.
She marched down the corridor and shoved open the main doors of the Institute.
Outside, the plaza was swarming with reporters and hostile crowds. The moment she appeared, a wall of cameras swiveled toward her, flashes exploding like strobe lights.
Dominic stormed after her, grabbing her wrist in a vice grip. "What the hell do you think you're doing?!"
She wrenched her arm free, her face a mask of ice. "The whole city is claiming my father is a fraud. I know it's a lie. So, I am going to clear his name right here, in front of the entire world."
Dominic's jaw tightened. "Who do you think you are? You think the media cares what you believe?"
Seraphina smirked. "I'm nobody. But the science speaks for itself."
She turned to the mob of journalists, projecting her voice over the noise. "Ladies and gentlemen of the press! I am Arthur Sinclair's daughter. I know for a fact my father did not commit academic fraud. To prove it, I am officially demanding a live, public rematch between Arthur Sinclair and Dr. Charles Ross, right here, right now, with all of you as witnesses!"
The crowd erupted into a frenzy of excited murmurs.
Dominic's eyes narrowed dangerously. "Absolutely not. The assessment is over. The results are final."
Seraphina locked eyes with him. "Are you scared? Terrified your guy can't beat my father in a fair fight? Or are you just afraid your little backdoor conspiracy is going to be exposed on live television?"
The reporters instantly smelled blood and began shouting demands to broadcast the rematch.
Dominic stared her down, his jaw muscles ticking, the air around him dropping to sub-zero temperatures.
His gaze screamed a lethal warning: You are playing with fire.
Despite the icy dread creeping up her spine, Seraphina refused to back down.
She didn't want a war with Dominic, but if this plagiarism charge stuck, her father's legacy would be completely annihilated.
She had to clear his name.
"Fine!" Cynthia snapped, abandoning the sweet act. "If you're begging to be publicly humiliated, I'll gladly give you the stage."
She refused to believe her uncle, an elite overseas researcher, could possibly lose to some washed-up local has-been.
She turned to Dominic. "Dominic. If she wants a massacre, let's give it to her."
Dominic looked at her, then back at Seraphina. His eyes were dark and unreadable, but finally, he gave a curt nod.
When Charles heard the news, he nearly had a panic attack.
He knew exactly how brilliant Arthur was. In a fair fight, he was dead in the water.
But backed into a corner in front of the press, he had no choice.
He gave a stiff nod. "Prep the lab."
He quickly exchanged a dark look with his assistant. Understanding the silent order, the assistant slipped away from the crowd.
A slimy smile crept onto Charles's lips. He might lack the skill, but he had other methods.
